La commissione governativa britannica sulla concorrenza ha
approvato il progetto di fusione tra P&O Princess Cruises
e Royal Caribbean Cruises
Ha ritenuto che «il progetto di fusione non abbia un significativo
impatto sulla concorrenza»
La commissione sulla concorrenza del governo di Londra ha approvato
il progetto di fusione tra la compagnia britannica
P&O Princess Cruises (POPC), terzo operatore del mercato crocieristico mondiale,
e quella statunitense Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCCL), seconda compagnia
del mercato mondiale alle spalle della Carnival (che ha anch’essa avviato un analogo
tentativo di takeover sulla P&O Princess). La commissione ha ritenuto che «il mercato
crocieristico del Regno Unito sia caratterizzato da crescita,
varietà e opportunità d'accesso» ed ha previsto
che «tale situazione possa proseguire». Nelle sue conclusioni,
rese note oggi, la commissione ha spiegato che «il numero
dei passeggeri trasportati è più che triplicato
tra il 1990 e il 2000 e circa un terzo dei letti disponibili nel
2000 sono stati offerti da operatori che non erano presenti in
questa attività fino al 1995 o successivamente. Inoltre
tra un terzo e un quarto dei passeggeri britannici scelgono navi
che sono dedicate principalmente ai clienti nordamericani o del
continente europeo, piuttosto che scegliere linee crocieristiche
rivolte al mercato nazionale». «Perciò - ha concluso
la commissione - vista tutta questa varietà e scelta, e
visto che l'opinione diffusa degli analisti dell'industria è
che la capacità crocieristica continuerà a crescere,
non riteniamo che, mettendo insieme RCCL e POPC, il progetto di
fusione abbia un significativo impatto sulla concorrenza».
Il progetto di fusione dovrà ora sottostare al giudizio
delle autorità americane, atteso entro la fine del prossimo
agosto.
